Osteoporosis doesn’t have to be a done deal. Once you are diagnosed with it, you do have options to improve your quality of life. Discuss all options with your doctor before deciding on a course of action.
It is a matter of calcium. Not enough and your bones will become brittle and weak. Since the skeletal system supports your weight, fractures due to falls are more common when the bones are weak. That can mean painful recuperation.
The age group most affected is post-menopausal women. With estrogen levels reduced, bones are vulnerable to density loss. But, there is hope.
One suggestion your doctor may have for you is calcium supplements. Depending on your appetite or food choices, you may not get enough calcium in your diet. Foods high in calcium include dairy products, green vegetables and meats. But, bone health doesn’t just depend on calcium but also on getting enough vitamin D.
Functional foods make it easier to increase your calcium intake. Juices, breads and cereals are now fortified with calcium so it is almost effortless to get what you need. The amount of calcium supplementation required depends on that. You don’t want to take too much.
Most of the vitamin D we get is through our skin. Your doctor may recommend spending a certain amount of time in the sun each day as well as eating foods high in vitamin D. calcium and vitamin D work hand in hand to meet the calcium needs of the bones as well as the tissues.
Hormone therapy is another way to treat osteoporosis. It seems that in the presence of estrogen, bones are denser and less prone to fracture. After menopause, estrogen levels are reduced. Taking part in hormone replacement therapy can reverse or prevent precious bone from being lost.
There are risks involved. Women may experience blood clots, increased stroke risk and heart disease as a result of this hormone therapy.
There are other medications that can prevent bone loss in the first place. These medications include Fosamax, Boniva, Reclast and Actonel. They function to prevent bone from being lost. Your doctor can advise you on which one, if any, will be beneficial to you.
Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese healing art, is being employed as a way to stop bone loss. Acupuncture uses pressure at specific points through needles to affect changes in the body. Stimulating certain points is supposed to increase production of calcitonin in the body. This hormone stops bone from being lost. Some have found relieve from pain in their bones in the process.
Every treatment for osteoporosis won’t work for everybody. Talk to your doctor to see what will work best for you and your situation.
